QUALITY PROFILE OF UGANDA COFFEE

Uganda coffee is grouped into two types:

  1. Arabica

  2. Robusta

This coffee is grown in different areas at different altitudes.

Coffee growing areas:

  • Arabica: Around Mt. Elgon in the East, Mountain ranges in West Nile, Mt. Rwenzori and Muhavura ranges in Southwest Uganda at an altitude range of 1,300-2,300 Metres; and

  • Robusta: Lake Victoria basin, which is300 km in radius at varying altitude of 900-1,500Metres

Temperature range: Annual Average 23-29 degrees Celsius.

Production

Harvesting period: All year around with major peaks: -

  • Robusta: November to February

  • Arabica: September to December

Average export percentages: Robusta 85%
                                          Arabica  15%
Uganda coffee is also classified according to the method of processing as follows:

Processing

Robusta: Dry Method: Natural Robusta
               Wet method: Washed Robusta
Arabica: Dry method: Natural Arabica (Drugar)
             Wet method: Washed Arabica (Bugisus & Wugars)

Uganda coffee is grouped into three different categories according to its quality: 

Premium grades

    • Natural Robusta- Screen 19, Scr 18, Scr 17, Scr 15, Scr 14, Scr 13 & Scr12

    • Washed Arabica- Bugisus AA, A, AB, PB, B & Wugar

    • Natural Arabica - Drugar

Specialty grades

  • Washed Robusta – Ungraded

  • Organic coffee – Robusta & Arabica (over 20,000 farmers certified).

  • Utz Kapeh – under development

Miscellaneous grades

  • BHP 1899, 1599, 1199, 1013, Black beans, Triage, & Bugisu UG.

Special Attributes of Uganda Robusta
Uganda Robusta has special attributes compared to other robustas. These include:

 

 

  • It is grown on high altitude (900-1500metres above sea level) than any other origins.

 

  • It is not propagated by any genetic modifications, but it multiplied vegetatively by rooted cuttings and elite seed.

 

  • Uganda coffee is generally grown with no application chemical fertilizers, no fungicides or pesticides, and therefore organic by default.

 

  • Robusta coffee has its origins in Uganda. Therefore the topography, soils and climate of Uganda are perfect for the natural growth of robusta coffee. 

 

 

Unique qualities of Uganda Robusta
Uganda robustas are very unique and stand apart from the robustas produced from other origins in several qualities including:

 

 

  • They have hard beans, which give a good roast.

 

  • They have a mild soft sweet and neutral taste.

 

  • Uganda robusta has high frothing properties suitable and ideal for preparation of espressos.

 

  • Uganda robusta coffee is available all year around.
